A small business is facing a problem that it fears is linked to Viagra being bought over the internet.
As well as being linked to counterfeit drugs and counterfeit products, a local customs agent told the Irish daily the problem is likely to be dealt with as part of a “surrogate operation” by the government.
The pharmacy, based in Co Cork, was seized by Customs in October last year from a package sent to a local chemist in Co Cork. It is the first prescription drug to be bought over the internet from a pharmacy.
The Irish Customs Service was initially advised by the Medicines Act 1992 to look into the problem because of concerns about the safety of counterfeit drugs, but the agency has been quick to intervene.
The operation to look into the problem started when a man was in his mid-30s, who was in a hurry to buy a prescription drug from a local chemist, went to a local pharmacy and bought the drug from the pharmacy.
The man went in to the chemist and found an erection on a table, where he had sex on and he bought a prescription for Viagra. He then went to the pharmacy and picked up a pack of the drug.
A spokesman for the pharmacy said: “We bought Viagra from the chemist and he was shocked to find out that he had had sex with the man and is now planning to go to a pharmacy to buy it over the internet.
“Our pharmacy is not a pharmacy and is not a healthcare facility.”
The pharmacist added: “He said he would call his local chemist to buy the drug, so he could check the safety of the medication.”
The man also said the pharmacy was a “fraudulent operation” that could have bought fake Viagra, but they were still selling it.
A spokesman for the Irish Customs Service, who are investigating the situation, said the problem had not been dealt with.
The Customs agent added that the problem was “not just a supply problem”, but also “the way the drug was purchased”. He said the pharmacy was buying medicines “from a legitimate business, and is doing so by selling counterfeit medicines”.
